Polyphant: Cornish soapstone

Polyphant Stone is a soft metamorphic rock type that is predominantly blue grey with green patches, and white and brown veins.

It is easily worked with hand tools and takes a high polish.

Polyphant Quarry is mentioned in the Doomsday book.

The stone has been used for internal decorative carving and also general construction externally.

Nigel Owen are quarry owners and supply blocks for sculpture.
Polyphant Stone is only supplied from the supply yard in Yelvertoft. It is not available ex quarry.

Alabaster

Our business in Yelvertoft was started in 1949 to work Alabaster.

The Alabaster we stock is from various sources.

Alabaster varies in colour, veining and texture.

The blocks are random in shape and size when they arrive and we then cut them to reveal the inside of the block.
They are then cut the minimum number of times to produce sound pieces. Most pieces will have several cut faces.

We use purpose made, dry cutting frame saws to section Alabaster.
